🦋The Four Converted Stars
In Doushu Astrology, based on a person’s birth year—and during certain years, months, days, or shi-chens (one shi-chen is two hours)—some stars on the Doushu Life Chart may acquire new characteristics and shift from a passive to an active state. When a star undergoes this transformation, it is known as a converted star. Only 15 of the 108 stars can be converted. Converted stars are among the most important in Doushu Astrology and are typically the first or second set of stars examined when interpreting a life chart.
🌿The Ten Heavenly Stems
- 🗓️ In the Chinese calendar system, the Ten Heavenly Stems are units used to record time.
- 🗓️ These time units include the year, month, day, and shi-chen (bi-hourly periods). There are twelve shi-chens in one day.
🌿The Ten Heavenly Stems are:
| Lable | Heavenly Stems | Yin Yang | Element |
| H1 | Jia (甲) | Yang | Wood |
| H2 | Yi (乙) | Yin | Wood |
| H3 | Bing (丙) | Yang | Fire |
| H4 | Ding (丁) | Yin | Fire |
| H5 | Wu (戊) | Yang | Earth |
| H6 | Ji (己) | Yin | Earth |
| H7 | Geng (庚) | Yang | Metal |
| H8 | Xin (辛) | Yin | Metal |
| H9 | Ren (壬) | Yang | Water |
| H10 | Gui (癸) | Yin | Water |
- Yang represents masculine or active energy.
- Yin represents feminine or receptive energy.
For convenience, this website labels the Ten Heavenly Stems as H1 through H10.
The terms Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch are shortened here to Stem and Branch.
Odd-numbered Stems are Yang, and even-numbered Stems are Yin.
📌 Reminder: Earthly Branches are not used when converting stars
- During each Stem period, four specific stars are converted into one of four types of conversion.
- When a star is converted, it shifts from passive to active and acquires new characteristics.
- Converted Stars act as catalysts, triggering events during Major or Annual Fortunes.
🌠 What Does “Conversion” Mean?
🗓️During each Stem period, four specific stars are converted into one of four types of conversion.
When a star is converted, it changes from passive to active, gaining new symbolic meanings and behaviors.
Converted Stars act like catalysts, often triggering key events during a person’s Major or Annual Fortune periods.

💫 How to Read Converted Stars
You’ll see conversion types written as [To + Conversion Type + Star].
For example, To Wealth Star refers to any star that has been converted to Wealth, without specifying which one.
The effect of a Converted Star depends on:
- Which star is converted (its original nature), and
- Which palace it occupies in the chart.
A Palace represents one of the twelve life areas—such as the Life Palace, Career Palace, or Wealth Palace.
🌟 The Three Extraordinary Stars and the Challenge Star
Among all Converted Stars:
- To Wealth, To Authority, and To Brightness Stars are auspicious and are called the Three Extraordinary Stars.
- To Darkness Star is a Challenge Star, representing obstacles or difficulties.
However, in practice, even the To Darkness Star can bring positive growth, while the Three Extraordinary Stars may sometimes cause pressure.
Everything depends on the palace and the overall chart balance.
⭐ The Fifteen Convertible Stars
Only fifteen stars in Doushu Astrology can be converted:
🦋 11 Main Stars
👑 Polaris 🧠 Thinker ☀️ Sun 🪙 Gold 🐼 Child 🦁 Principle 🌙 Moon 🐺 Greedy Wolf ⚗️ Dark 🌳 Elder 🚗 Warrior
🦋 2 Progression Stars
📚 Literature 🎵 Music
🦋 2 Assistant Stars
♂️ Left Assistant ♀️ Right Assistant
Some stars are limited to certain types of conversion, while others can experience all four.
For example:
- The Left Assistant Star and the Right Assistant Star can only be converted to Brightness.
- The Wild Star can be converted to Wealth or Darkness.
- The Thinker Star can be converted to Wealth, Authority, Brightness, or Darkness—all four types.
💰 To Wealth
| English Name | Chinese Name | Yin Yang | Element | Type | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Wealth | 化祿 (huà lù) | yin | earth | Converted | H1 |
The To Wealth Star symbolizes abundance. When a star is converted to Wealth, its positive qualities are enhanced. This can cause a person to "gain more"—becoming more affectionate, generous, loving, relaxed, and talkative.
For example, if the To Wealth Star appears in the Wealth Palace, the person is likely to earn more money. If it is in the Health Palace (which represents the body), the person may gain weight.
If the Thinker Star is converted to Wealth in the Life Palace, it can make the person more intelligent, clever, and talkative. As a result, the person may be able to earn more money through their intellect. They may also attract more friends of the opposite sex.
However, for some stars, being converted to Wealth may not be entirely beneficial. For instance, the Child Star represents enjoyment. People influenced by the Child Star tend to love having fun and enjoying life. When the Child Star is converted to Wealth, the person may overindulge in pleasures and neglect important responsibilities. The converted To Wealth Child Star can lead to procrastination and distraction from life’s essential goals.
🗡️ To Authority
| English Name | Chinese Name | Yin Yang | Element | Type | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Authority | 化權 (huà quán) | yang | wood | Converted | H1 |
When a star is converted to authority, the person has a strong desire to be in control of their own life. They become more competitive, assertive, hardworking, and willing to take more risks for greater rewards.
When the To Authority Star is in the Life Palace, especially in the Career Palace, the person is often a company manager or a business owner. However, a strong desire for control can sometimes lead to negative consequences. It could make the person more arrogant and manipulative, thus creating challenges in interpersonal relationships.
For example, the Polaris Star symbolizes the king. A polaris person is a natural leader and always wants to be in control. If it is converted to authority, the person may possess too much power; therefore, abuse their power and become tyrannical, making them difficult to be around.
The Elder Star has the personality of a village chief or a group leader whose role is to protect the young and help those in need. When converted to authority, the person becomes more assertive, which can lead them to seek control over every aspect of their environment and expect others to do as they say. As a result, Elder Stars can sometimes be lonely because they often distance themselves from those who don't share their beliefs, or they are avoided by others because of their manipulative nature.
🛡️ To Brightness
| English Name | Chinese Name | Yin Yang | Element | Type | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Brightness | 化科 (huà kē) | yang | water | Converted | H1 |
When a star is converted to brightness, the person becomes more cautious and protective, likes cleanliness, and avoids anything illegal. They prefer stability and are unwilling to take risks for quick gains. Such individuals also tend to excel academically.
In addition, the To Brightness Star can increase a person's public exposure. Depending on the star combination, the individual may become either famous or infamous. Since the To Brightness Star is an auspicious star, the person is more often famous than infamous.
The To Brightness Star is also known as the "lucky person" star because, during a Major Fortune or an Annual Fortune, it has the power to alleviate difficulties. For instance, it can reduce marriage-related problems or help the person find the right doctor during a major health crisis. It can also lessen the effects of the To Darkness Star.
Since the To Brightness Star represents exposure, if a person is involved in a hidden extramarital relationship, it is likely to be revealed when this star is encountered. Similarly, if the person is engaged in illegal activities, the To Brightness Star will likely expose their actions.
🐌 To Darkness
| English Name | Chinese Name | Yin Yang | Element | Type | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Darkness | 化忌 (huà jì) | yin | fire | Converted | H1 |
The To Darkness Star represents obstacles, delays, lingering situations, and uncertainty. It causes a person to be stubborn and unyielding. The To Darkness Star also diminishes the positive qualities of a star. For example, the Greedy Wolf Star typically exhibits good social skills and has many friends of the opposite sex. However, if the Greedy Wolf Star is converted to Darkness, the person may experience more arguments with friends and have fewer friends of the opposite sex.
The Thinker Star represents the mind, the nervous system, and the limbs of the human body. If it is converted to Darkness, the person may have difficulty concentrating on one subject, struggle with direction (often getting lost while driving), and experience frequent delays.
The palace in which the converted star is located on the Life Chart represents the life challenges the person faces and the obstacles they must confront and overcome. For example, if the To Darkness Star is in the Spouse Palace, the partner's behavior or way of doing things may be unexpected after marriage. Additionally, the To Darkness Star in the Spouse Palace charges the Career Palace, indicating that the person may lose their job after marriage.

🌿Annual Converted Stars: Annual Converted Stars are used for the current year's fortune or the fortune for a particular year. Each year has a different set of converted stars, and they are derived from the stem of the year being observed.
🌿Monthly Converted Stars: Monthly Converted Stars are used for monthly fortunes. They are derived from the month stem of the month being observed.
🌿Daily Converted Stars: Daily Converted Stars are used for daily fortunes. They are derived from the day stem of the day being observed.
🌿Shi-Chen Converted Stars: One Shi-Chen is 2 hours long. There are 12 Shi-Chens in a day. Shi-Chen Converted Stars are used for Shi-Chen fortunes (bihour fortune). They are derived from the Shi-Chen stem of the Shi-Chen being observed.
🌿Note: Monthly, daily, and Shi-Chen converted stars are not used by most Doushu astrologers.
🦋 Flying Stars Introduction
On the Doushu Astrology Life Chart, there are 12 palaces, each represented by a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stem is called the Palace Stem, and the Earthly Branch is called the Palace Branch.
Only Palace Stems are used for Flying Stars. Flying Stars are Converted Stars that originate from Palace Stems. There are three types of Flying Stars: Fly-Out Stars, Fly-In Stars, and Self-Converted Stars.
🌿 Fly-Out Stars: When the Palace Stem of one palace converts stars in other palaces, the converted stars are called Fly-Out Stars. The palace where the stars fly out from is called the Originating Palace. The Originating Palace represents the cause of an event.
🌸 The Four Fly-Out Stars: Fly-Out Wealth, Fly-Out Authority, Fly-Out Brightness, Fly-Out Darkness.
🌿 Fly-In Stars: When a star in a palace is converted by the Palace Stem of another palace, the converted star is called a Fly-In Star. The palace where the star is converted is called the Receiving Palace. The Receiving Palace represents the result of an event triggered by the Originating Palace.
🌸 The Four Fly-In Stars: Fly-In Wealth, Fly-In Authority, Fly-In Brightness, Fly-In Darkness.
🌿 Intermediate Palace: The Receiving Palace can also be called the Intermediate Palace when the Fly-In Converted Star is Fly-In Darkness or Fly-In Authority, because these stars can project their energy to their Outer Palaces. The term can also apply when the Fly-In Converted Star is Fly-In Wealth or Fly-In Brightness; however, the energy projected from these stars to their Outer Palaces is usually minimal and therefore disregarded by most astrologers. Among them, Fly-In Darkness projects the strongest energy, followed by Fly-In Authority.
- The Outer Palace of the Fly-In Darkness Star is called the Fly-In Darkened Palace.
- The Outer Palace of the Fly-In Authority Star is called the Fly-In Pressured Palace.
- The Outer Palace of the Fly-In Wealth Star is called the Fly-In Enriched Palace.
- The Outer Palace of the Fly-In Brightness Star is called the Fly-In Brightened Palace.
👉 Important Distinction:
The Darkened Palace, Pressured Palace, Enriched Palace, and Brightened Palace are derived from the birth stem of the individual.
The Fly-In Darkened Palace, Fly-In Pressured Palace, Fly-In Enriched Palace, and Fly-In Brightened Palace are derived from the Palace Stem of their Originating Palaces.
🌿 Self-Converted Stars: When a star is converted by its own Palace Stem (the stem in the same palace as the star), it is called a Self-Converted Star.
🌸 The Four Self-Converted Stars: Self-Converted Wealth, Self-Converted Authority, Self-Converted Brightness, Self-Converted Darkness.
🌿 Effects of Self-Converted Stars: The effects of Self-Converted Stars differ from those of Natal Converted Stars of the same type. The energy of Self-Converted Stars is generally less stable than that of Natal Converted Stars. In particular, the negative effects caused by Self-Converted Authority and Self-Converted Darkness tend to be more severe.
🦋 Flying Star Palace Types
🌿 Charged Palace: When the To Darkness Star or the To Authority Star projects energy onto its Outer Palace, the Outer Palace becomes the Charged Palace. Only the To Darkness Star and the To Authority Star can charge a palace, and the result is usually negative.
🌿 Effects on Charged Palace: A palace charged by the To Darkness Star suffers more damage than a palace charged by the To Authority Star. According to most Doushu astrologers, the To Authority Star causes only about half the damage of the To Darkness Star.
🌿 Darkened Palace: A palace charged by the To Darkness Star is also called a Darkened Palace.
🌿 Pressured Palace: A palace charged by the To Authority Star is also called a Pressured Palace.
🌿 Enriched Palace: When the To Wealth Star projects energy onto its Outer Palace, the Outer Palace is called an Enriched Palace.
🌿 Brightened Palace: When the To Brightness Star illuminates its Outer Palace, the Outer Palace is called a Brightened Palace.
🌿 Note: According to many astrologers, Enriched and Brightened Palaces have very little influence and are therefore often disregarded.
🌿 Fly-In Enriched Palace: When the To Wealth Star flies into a palace and enriches its Outer Palace, the result is a Fly-In Enriched Palace.
🌿 Fly-In Pressured Palace: When the To Authority Star flies into a palace and pressures its Outer Palace, the result is a Fly-In Pressured Palace.
🌿 Fly-In Brightened Palace: When the To Brightness Star flies into a palace and illuminates its Outer Palace, the result is a Fly-In Brightened Palace.
🌿 Fly-In Darkened Palace: When the To Darkness Star flies into a palace and darkens its Outer Palace, the result is a Fly-In Darkened Palace.
🌿 Self-Charged Palace: If a Fly-Out Star is either the To Darkness Star or the To Authority Star, and it flies to its own Outer Palace, the Outer Palace reflects the energy back. This is called Self-Charged. The damage caused by a Self-Charged Star affects both the original Fly-Out Palace and its Outer Palace.
🌿 Types of Self-Charged Palaces: Depending on the star, these are called Self-Charged Darkness or Self-Pressured Authority. There are also Self-Enriched Wealth and Self-Brightened Brightness.

- The Child Star is converted to Wealth,
- The Thinker Star is converted to Authority,
- The Literature Star is converted to Brightness, and
- The Wild Star is converted to Darkness.
